A new wave of highly efficient emergency care facilities is upping the ante on patient care. All hospital systems have unique models of care delivery but each shares a common goal: to improve the overall patient experience, which includes minimizing time spent in the waiting room, as well as reducing the overall length of stay. this goal of maximum efficiency and re-thinking the patient experience has created different spaces that are uncommon to the typical ED.

Clinical laboratory testing is an integral part of healthcare delivery. According to the American Clinical Laboratory Association, national lab tests guide more than 70 percent of medical decisions and personalized wellness options, including early detection, personalized treatment, and wellness programs, and responses to an individual’s genetic makeup. From my own discussions with clinical testing lab operators, the common feeling is that proper investment must be aligned with this critical patient care value.

With a goal to further its mission to help patients be well, get well, and stay well, Virtua Health (Marlton, N.J.) turned to Francis Cauffman Architects (FCA; Philadelphia) to design a new cancer center. The challenge was that it required rezoning and repurposing a former 66,000-square-foot supermarket that sits adjacent to Virtua’s Health and Wellness Center in Moorestown, N.J. The new 44,150-square-foot Virtua Samson Cancer Center, which opened in October 2018, features radiation oncology, an infusion treatment suite, and administrative offices, with shelled space for a future third-party infusion practice. A partnering ambulatory surgical practice is housed in the remaining 21,850 square feet of the building.

Brandywine Global Investment Management, an investment and asset management firm, recently relocated its headquarters from Cira Centre to 1735 Market Street in Philadelphia.
