Hackensack Meridian Health’s extensive hospital network offers students premiere access to clinical teaching sites across a variety of healthcare programs. The Interprofessional Health Sciences Campus (HIS) in Nutley, New Jersey, comprises the College of Nursing, School of Health and Medical Sciences, and the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. The Health Sciences Campus first opened in 2015 and was the first private medical school in New Jersey in decades. To revitalize the campus, the network tapped long-time collaborator, architecture and design firm FCA, with the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine master plan and renovation. The campus reopened the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine in September 2021.

The renovation, entailing 38,000 square feet of space, expands the amount of teaching and practice space available. New classrooms at the medical school will offer multimedia capabilities that are so necessary for instruction in the 21st century, especially in the medical fields.

As the landscape for academic institutions grows more competitive, determining how human factors impact the design of STEM facilities is becoming a significant consideration when it comes to attracting students and research faculty. As a result, team members at Francis Cauffman Architects are developing a set of metrics to identify and assess the value of design features that influence occupant experience in academic STEM spaces with the goal of creating an index that can be used to inform future renovation and new construction projects. Human factor points are allocated to spaces and design features that have a demonstrated positive impact on student enrollment, result in high levels of user satisfaction, and accommodate the teaching and research goals of the facility. In a post-COVID world, this additional evaluation tool may be more important than ever.

FCA has announced the opening of its new Florida office, located in Orlando.
Orlando is currently the 2nd fastest growing region in the United States. Recent changes to Florida's Certificate of Need requirements in healthcare show a tremendous potential for significant capital investment in the sector. FCA can bring its expertise in healthcare planning and design to the region to support the health systems throughout Florida.
FCA currently has three active projects in Florida, which include projects in Tampa, Miami, and West Palm Beach, along with a new project in Puerto Rico. By opening the office in Florida FCA will be better able to support its clients and reinforce their reputation as a client-focused firm.
Aran McCarthy, AIA, NCARB will act as the Healthcare Principal-in-Charge for Orlando Operations and will be supported by Paul Degillio, Senior Project Manager.
